Born in New York Cityto a musical family (his father an organist),Rick's musical foundation included classical piano lessonsfrom age 7, and later ragtime and jazz which he continuesto pursue. He began playing professionally in bands at theage of 15. An encounter with Herbie Hancock's Thrust quicklybrought his focus to the funk.
